Kamik’s First Sled

by Matilda Sulurayok; Qin Leng (illus.)

PrintTaking over from Donald Uluadluak, who wrote the first Kamik story, Inuit Elder Matilda Sulurayok draws on her memories of traditional dog rearing in this wonderful companion volume featuring young Inuit boy Jake and his eponymous frolicking pup. In this instalment, Jake’s dog has grown, but he’s still got a lot to learn. The boy’s grandmother imparts tips on training Kamik to be a sled dog, and it’s no surprise that Jake learns some valuable lessons as well. Sulurayok’s exuberant voice is well-matched by lively illustrations from Qin Leng (who also illustrated the first Kamik book).
