Designer Marijke Friesen draws on medical images and landscape illustration to convey the sense of Christine Fischer Guy’s debut novel, The Umbrella Mender (Buckrider Books)
1. I was very excited to find this photograph. The woman could easily be Hazel, the main character in The Umbrella Mender. Hazel is a young nurse living in Northern Ontario in the 1950s, and working with tuberculosis patients from neighbouring aboriginal communities. Much of the novel takes place in Hazel’s memory, so I used the old-fashioned photo corners to elicit a feeling of looking into the past.
