M&S to publish new David Davidar novel

Yes, you read that headline right. McClelland & Stewart president Doug Pepper has announced the acquisition of a new novel by ousted Penguin Canada president David Davidar, entitled Ithaca. From the press release:

Set in the international world of book publishing and his most ambitious novel to date, the book is scheduled for publication in Fall 2011.

“We’re thrilled to be publishing Ithaca,” Pepper said. “With this book David turns his keenly observant and passionate eye on a subject he knows well, giving us a rich, layered, and poignant novel about the publishing industry at a time of its greatest change in a century. Honest, witty, and edgy, the book’s message is ultimately hopeful, about the power of great story-telling and how it has endured and, despite the cataclysmic changes of the last several years, will continue to endure.”

Isn’t Ithaca the original birthplace of the ancient rite of sexual harrassment?

Does Davidar’s fictional world of book publishing include CEOs who sexually harass their employees?

I wonder why this book (which sound like it’s the least imaginatively-challenging thing he’s written, being simply about the industry he works in) is considered “his most ambitious novel”, coming as it does after a multi-generational epic like “The House of Blue Mangoes”. I suppose the fact that it’s hype from the McClelland & Stewart press department has something to do with it.

I look forward to reading the book for what it is and how it i written. I applaud M+S for publishing it!!

Look for the tips in Chapter 5 on how to choose the right cologne for that special business trip, and how to close a book deal with a publisher who evidently shares your own moral character. Hey R, it’s time for my foot massage . . .

I think it’s quite unfair to drag in the sexual harassment thing and make speculations on what inspired Davidar to name his novel ‘Ithaca’. A novel should be taken for what it is: a novel, a work of fiction. Davidar’s a fine writer and havine enjoyed ‘The House of Blue Mangoes’ I’m sure he has something good up his sleeve this time too.

Think it will have be as awesome as his crappy love notes?

I see the boy’s network is at it again.
Publishing his story is an an insult to women working in the industry.
Why are they rewarding someone for such bad behaviour.
