Apple claims 250,000 e-book downloads on iPad’s first day

A short post over at Galleycat points to a press release from Apple wherein the tech giant claims that  300,000 iPads were sold in the U.S. on Saturday and the iBookstore counted 250,000 downloads. The Galleycat headline originally referred to 250,000 “sales” at the iBookstore, but has since been changed because, as one astute commenter pointed out, it’s impossible to tell how many downloads were actual sales and how many were free e-books in the public domain.

In the press release, Apple CEO Steve Jobs waxes positively orgasmic about the iPad’s potential:

It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world “ it’s going to be a game changer…. iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad.

Certainly, 250,000 downloads from the iBookstore is nothing to sneeze at. It will be interesting to see how these numbers hold up over the long term. In the meantime, if Quillblog could have one wish, it would be that the term “game changer” be stricken from the lexicon …
