Kobo launches e-book store across the pond

Making good on its promise to go global, Indigo co-owned e-reading service Kobo – formerly known as Shortcovers – announced today that it has launched an e-book store for the U.K., the company’s first region-specific launch outside of North America.

According to the press release, Kobo has partnered with several U.K. publishers, including Random House U.K., Penguin U.K., Bloomsbury, Simon & Schuster U.K., and Faber & Faber. The company is also working with the Independent Publishers Guild to make sure smaller presses are represented in its list. The new U.K. store will include a bestseller list specific to the region, and local titles will be highlighted on the website.

Michael Tamblyn, Kobo’s executive vice-president of content, sales, and merchandising, says in the release that this is “the first of many international launches for Kobo this year.”

“Our focus is on assembling the world’s best catalogue of content for our readers and delivering a fantastic purchasing and reading experience on any device a customer chooses,” Tamblyn says. “We will also provide readers in the U.K. with a huge selection of content.”
