The Kindle comes to Canada

After delaying the Canadian release of the international version of the Kindle, Amazon announced this morning that it will begin selling the portable reading device north of the border.

At the time of this writing, Canadians can now order the Kindle through Amazon.com. The device retails for $259 (U.S.).

The Kindle will give Canadians access to more than 300,000 e-book titles and 90 newspapers, including the National Post and The Globe and Mail.

From CBC.ca:

“We know that Canadians are passionate about books and reading, and we’re excited to make Kindle available to our customers there,” said Ian Freed, vice-president of Kindle, in a statement. “Kindle enables customers around the world including Canada to think of a book and start reading it in under 60 seconds.”

But who is the wireless provider?

    Bell, rumour has it.

Wrong! Sorry, it’s At&t worldwide, which mysteriously has the same coverage as Rogers, but isn’t Rogers?

Like most people read enough books (or enough different ones, anyways) to need a device that holds 1500? Chuh. I think a lot of people are just turned on by the toy factor of it – ultimately, eBooks will only entrench a few popular, well-marketed titles even more firmly.
