On Nov. 6, authors, illustrators, publishing types, and media mingled at the annual TD Canadian Children’s Literature Awards, administered by the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. The school-themed gala was held at the Carlu in Toronto, and featured a school-bus poutine table and pencil-crayon centrepieces.
CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers hosted, avoiding mention of current tensions at the broadcaster with the exception of a lighthearted show of support. Holding an “I love CBC” sign aloft, Rogers quipped, “This is the only cheese I’ve had all evening.”
The evening’s biggest prize, the $30,000 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, went to Kathy Stinson and illustrator Dušan Petričić for The Man with the Violin (Annick Press).
