Arctic Visions: Pictures from a Vanished World

by Fred Bruemmer

Between 1964 and 1995, Montreal-based photographer Fred Bruemmer spent part of each year living among the Inuit in the Arctic. Bruemmer was enthralled by the “magic and majesty” of the land itself – “its rugged beauty, its haunting loneliness, its infinite space” – and by the lives of the Inuit, whose camps were “oases of independence and cultural continuum.”

The result of his time in the north is Arctic Visions, a magisterial book that combines gorgeous black-and-white photographs with essays and commentary about a culture that is as unique as it is fascinating. Bruemmer’s camera effortlessly captures both the stark immensity of the landscape and the intimacy of intergenerational life among the Inuit. His sure eye for perspective provides his portraits with epic grandeur, and the sharp contrast of black and white lends the images a visceral immediacy.
