Kids Can Press to adapt Carmilla series into a YA novel

c1Toronto children’s publisher Kids Can Press has announced that it will be adapting Carmilla, the digital series loosely based on Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 vampire novel of the same name, into a YA novel under the KCP Loft imprint. KCP president Lisa Lyons Johnston has acquired world publishing rights, with the “book project” slated for spring 2019 publication. The author(s) and title have yet to be announced.

Carmilla, produced by Toronto’s Shaftesbury Films under its Smokebomb Entertainment banner and shift2 entertainment agency, follows a modern-day university student and her vampire roommate. Its single-frame five-minute-or-less episodes – over one hundred of which have streamed through the company’s KindaTV Youtube channel – straddle the line between vlog and scripted TV format. The show has garnered accolades at the Canadian Screen Awards, the Shorty Awards, the Streamy Awards, and the Webby Awards. A full-length feature film version, Carmilla the Movie, is due in fall 2017.

“This is an exciting and notable acquisition for KCP Loft,” Lyons Johnston says in a press release. “We introduced the YA imprint with the intention of seeking out content from both traditional publishing marketplaces as well as from innovative, emerging platforms. We are proud to partner with Shaftesbury to transform Carmilla into a hotly anticipated bestselling novel for the legions of fans around the world that this original web series has attracted.”
