Publishing Technology Internship

We are seeking an energetic, creative, and well-rounded intern to help with an upcoming website redesign project for three independent Canadian book publishing companies: TouchWood Editions, Rocky Mountain Books, and Heritage House Publishing. The successful candidate will work alongside in-house staff and a contracted web developer to implement a complete overhaul of three websites. This position is a ten-month paid internship that starts in July 2017, and the successful candidate will work out of our Victoria, BC office in the heart of Cook Street Village.

Not only will this internship will give the right candidate an opportunity to collaborate daily with a number of book publishing and web design professionals, it will offer an an overview of the book publishing process, from acquisition to point of sale. The successful candidate will gain online book marketing experience, knowledge of how digital titles are distributed, and a lot about bibliographic data management.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be proficient in web design, specifically in creating/managing WordPress sites
  • Organize site content structures, navigation, and menus
  • Implement product pages with excerpts, author media kits, retail links, and social media integration
  • Have the ability to write concisely and to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Maintain a creative, positive, and problem-solving approach to challenging projects
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and time management skills, and have a keen eye for detail
  • Assist in building the consumer-facing brands of all three companies
  • Have a love of books

Qualifications and Required Skills

  • Current enrolment or recent graduate in a related post-secondary program
  • HTML5/CSS3, XML, and Office
  • Experience with WordPress, Yoast, and other WordPress plugins
  • Knowledge of industry standards in website development and content accessibility
  • UX design fundamentals
  • Knowledge of image editing in Photoshop and layout programs such as Adobe InDesign
  • Experience in data management and data entry
  • Social media competency

Desired Skills

  • Javascript/JQuery
  • SEO
  • Google Analytics
  • Familiarity with or interest in the book publishing industry
