This job combines digital marketing with traditional book promotion and editorial functions. It is a term position of about 9 months.
Lorimer is an independent publishing house based in Toronto. We publish 25-30 new titles annually. Our childrens and teen list of fiction and nonfiction focuses on reluctant and struggling readers. Our titles are widely recognized and recommended by childrens book reviewers in Canada and the U.S. Our adult list of 6-10 titles focuses on contemporary Canadian social and political issues.
We also provide promotion and marketing services to Formac Publishing, a regional publishing house in Halifax owned by James Lorimer that publishes 20 new titles annually.
You promote and publicize our books list to contacts in Canada and the US. You are the prime user of our database of promotion contacts. You manage our submissions of titles to awards and prizes. You track responses to these activities, and report regularly on results.
You are our social media expert, and coordinate our activities in this area. You work with our authors to provide them with advice and encouragement for their social media activities.
You assist our project manager with digital marketing activities. This includes copywriting for marketing email, updating product records, and assisting with the distribution of ONIX data to aggregators and ebook files to vendors.
This component of the job is a 5-hour weekly time allocation for working with the publisher on acquisition of titles for the Lorimer adult list. The support you provide is directed to our adult list of 6-10 titles annually. You participate in the process of identifying book ideas and the steps to acquire manuscripts.
Other publishing activities are assigned to this position as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Experience and education.
The successful candidate for this position will have an undergraduate degree in the liberal arts, and preferably a degree or certificate in book publishing. She/he will have a minimum of 2 years’ hands-on experience working in a marketing or promotional position in book publishing, and knowledge of metadata, digital marketing, social media and other relevant areas. Familiarity with the media where Canadian books are promoted is important. A track record of successful digital book marketing activities and social media engagement is expected.
This job involves using a range of software tools, including Microsoft Office, a separate database program, the distribution software which handles our book information (Klopotek), tools for manipulating our ONIX export, a time tracking program and project management software. You will be trained by the person now doing this job during the period before she leaves on maternity leave.
You will work closely with the Lorimer team in our Toronto office and with the staff at our distributor in Halifax. You report to the publisher.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a contract term position beginning immediately, and ending on or about 15 April 2015. Salary will be based on experience, and there will be a bonus paid for successful completion of the term. The company offers a benefit plan which includes extended health care, dental, and other elements. Our office is in the King-Spadina area of downtown Toronto.
