Position Overview

The University of Calgary Press within the Libraries and Cultural Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Marketing Specialist.

University of Calgary Press publishes scholarly and literary books approved by the Editorial Board of the Press. Reporting to the Director and working in collaboration with the Editorial & Marketing Coordinator, this position plans, facilitates and implements marketing of Press books and of the Press. The position requires the ability to work independently and exercise initiative, tact, good judgement, and confidentiality. The Marketing Specialist is responsible for his/her own work and priorities as well as for setting deadlines for others. Collaboration and coordination with Press staff, problem-solving, and communication with authors, reviewers, and other external parties are essential.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • In consultation with Director and Editorial & Marketing Coordinator, create, strategize and facilitate execution of marketing plan
  • In consultation with Director and Editorial & Marketing Coordinator, create, strategize and facilitate execution of community engagement activities
  • Create and maintain relationships related to Press publications with booksellers and librarians
  • Maintain marketing spreadsheets to monitor scheduling, budget and expenditure
  • Collaborate with other staff in creating and maintaining book metadata
  • Facilitate all social media for the Press, including website updates, Facebook and Twitter posts, newsletter, etc.
  • Monitor website for new title information upload and overall site functionality
  • Attend e-marketing training, maintain book promotion and course adoption email lists (maintenance, creation of email, and sending email) and create and disseminate e-marketing notices
  • Research advertising opportunities and implement advertising plan in consultation with Director and Editorial & Marketing Coordinator
  • Research and identify conferences at which to promote Press books
  • Facilitate planning and organization of Press displays at book launches, conferences and other events
  • Attend conferences and events, in Calgary or out of town, representing the Press
  • Monitor deadlines for advertising and event coordination to ensure that schedules are met
  • Write effective advertising copy and assist Designer with creation of brochures, advertisements and seasonal catalogues
  • Research book review opportunities, and respond to inquiries and requests for review copies.
  • Coordinate distribution of examination and desk copies (receive inquiries, write letters, prepare PO)
  • Apply for book industry awards (research, application, follow-up if shortlisted)
  • Process donation requests (receive inquiries, write letters, prepare PO)
  • Respond to general marketing inquiries
  • Maintain listings
  • Monitor ucpbooks@ucalgary.ca and ucpress@ucalgary.ca email accounts
  • Serve as a source of information about the Press for staff, authors, customers, faculty, and others

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A degree or certificate in marketing or a related discipline or comparable combination of work and educational experience
  • A minimum of three years of work experience in marketing along with a strong knowledge of marketing principles and practices
  • Demonstrated expertise in social media marketing and advertising copywriting
  • Experience in book publishing is preferred
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and research skills required with the ability to work independently, exercise initiative and good judgement, prioritize and complete several projects with varying deadlines
  • Knowledge of humanities and social sciences an asset
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office products, including Excel, is essential. Experience using database marketing and administrative software is essential
  • Demonstrated ability with Apple software related to graphic design, video and audio production an asset
