Key roles:
Using superior written and oral communication skills, strong organization skills, and a well-developed sense of tact, provide assistance to the Executive Director in the area of rights sales and purchases. As well, assist in the negotiation and coordination with the heads of sponsoring organizations for special publishing projects. Perform and/or organize publications activities in support of the daily operations of MQUP, in accordance with established goals and objectives. Establish and foster effective working relationships by identifying needs and providing support in the delivery of rights and publications services. Implement administrative procedures or systems that are moderately complex in support of MQUP’s operations and to ensure that publications meet or exceed established quality requirements. Act as advisor to clients with respect to the preparation of publications.

Typical Functions:
- Responds to requests to sell or purchase books or editions from other publishers.
- Responds to requests for permission to excerpt or photocopy material in MQUP publications, granting or denying permission, setting fees, and ensuring that payment is received.
- Plan, prepare and administer budgets with respect to rights, purchases and special projects.
- Oversee peer review process for special publications; ensure quality of manuscripts received and determine methods to improve overall presentation and content.
- Liaise with production department on production schedule and coordinate.
- Participate in the development of marketing strategies, evaluate cost-effective options and monitor results.
- Coordinate exchange of information and/or documents.

Qualifications preferred:
Undergraduate degree in the humanities or social sciences. Strong organizational, project management, communications and writing skills. Proven ability to work well under pressure, both independently and as part of a team. Three years direct experience in the publishing industry.

Job description: Reports to: Vice President of Publishing and Bargain

Purpose
• To manage OTB (open to buy) for a particular group of categories
• To manage the overall selection and assortment of product for a particular group of categories in order to drive sales and excite the customer
• To manage key financial metrics such as contribution margin, cost of goods sold, markdowns, etc

Key Responsibilities
• Select titles based on trends and historical sales and negotiate cost
• Work with publishers to re-purpose content to update the look and feel of the product and make it more appealing to the Indigo customer
• Planogram key titles and set up promotions
• Prepare and deliver line reviews
• Work with marketing and public relations to gain exposure of key titles
• Assist in managing the performance of the category group
o identifies best practices and opportunities for improvement
o against assortment and trend direction (external/internal research)
• Quality and effectiveness of vendor relationships; ensuring optimal performance through negotiations, working arrangements and resolution of issues and collaboration on opportunities
• Drive sales and net margin contribution through promotional activities
• Adhere to the operating standards and practices

Qualifications
The person in this role should have at least 3-5 years of experience in buying and category management of multi-commodity departments or equivalent experience in the publishing industry with a focus on custom publishing, editorial project management or acquisitions. A keen understanding of the Canadian retail book market and marketing experience are an asset as is familiarity with SAP. The individual should have strong negotiation and influence skills as well as excellent computer, communication, interpersonal, and spreadsheet skills including Excel. This person should be customer-focused and should have strong teamwork skills.

The Publicity & Marketing department at Penguin Group Canada has an opportunity for a Marketing and Online Associate. This permanent position is based at our Yonge & Eglinton office.

Marketing and Online Associate

In this role, the successful candidate will assist in supporting Penguin's consumer facing, bookseller, e-commerce and vendor related online activity to ensure content for Penguin sites are up-to-date, relevant and best promotes current as well as backlist titles for Canadian, international, and agency titles. The position is also responsible for supporting new and existing marketing initiatives including design of web graphics, electronic presentations, etc. The successful candidate will develop these materials using a variety of graphics software applications, techniques and tools. This role reports directly to the Senior Manager, Online Marketing and will provide both senior administrative support and general marketing support. The ideal candidate thrives under pressure, has strong organizational skills and a keen eye for design. The role requires a creative go-getter with strong conceptual skills and a can-do attitude who is meticulous, responsible, reliable, and well organized with solid web capabilities.

Responsibilities:
• Assist the Senior Manager, Online Marketing with all aspects of online updates and maintenance, including the development of briefs, and weekly project status reports
• Works closely day-to-day with Web Architect and Senior Manager, Online Marketing to ensure the timely delivery of effective content, features, and activities
• Liaises with marketing, publicity, sales and editorial departments to execute monthly production schedule and online catalogue database as required
• Co-ordinates provision of copy/visuals from internal/external sources
• Develops online sales and marketing presentation materials

Qualifications
• 2 – 3 years experience in online and direct to consumer marketing, preferably in the publishing industry
• A degree or diploma in marketing, advertising or web design
• Computer experience on both PC and Macintosh platforms
• Working knowledge of web design and programs (familiarity with HTML, InDesign, Photoshop, Dream Weaver, Illustrator and/or Acrobat highly desirable)
• Demonstrated project management experience
• Superior writing, editing and oral communication skills
• Research, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to prioritize and keep track of projects
• Ability to work independently and as a team player

Call for Applications
September 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010 Residency

Regina Public Library invites applications from Canadian creative writers for the position of Writer-in-Residence. The successful candidate will work with the public through individual consultations, community/school visits, and group workshops or seminars. The Writer-in-Residence will devote 80% of his/her time to personal writing projects. The author must live in Regina or surrounding area during the term of the residency. Experience working with the public, a history of literary publications, and a background in the literary field should be clearly demonstrated in the covering letter or résumé. Please include a résumé, 10 page writing sample, and three letters of reference from members of the writing community. References should include a daytime and evening phone number in their letters. Previous experience as a writer-in-residence or teacher would be an asset. All genres of writing will be considered.
Salary: $26,000/annum (under review/based on availability of grant funds.)
Eligibility Criteria:
Based on the Canada Council for the Arts guidelines.
