Thomas Allen Publishers vacates Toronto office

After nearly a decade at its current location, Thomas Allen Publishers, the publishing division of distributor Thomas Allen & Son, is closing its downtown Toronto office and relocating to the company’s head office in Markham, Ontario.

Unlike the recent shuttering of the offices of Key Porter Books, the move will not result in layoffs or a curtailment of the publishing program. Rather, says owner, president, and CEO Jim Allen, it is intended to foster closer ties between the company’s editorial, marketing, and publicity departments.

Earlier this year, publicity director Lisa Zaritzky relocated from the Toronto office to Markham, leaving only a handful of people in the downtown office. The three remaining full-time employees are publisher and editor Patrick Crean, senior editor Janice Zawerbny, and office manager Tara Persaud. On Oct. 22, they will move into a newly renovated space northeast of the city, with Crean and Zawerbny splitting their time between the new digs and their home offices.

The move comes as Thomas Allen celebrates its second Scotiabank Giller Prize shortlist nomination, for Sarah Selecky’s debut short story collection This Cake Is for the Party. Allen says the impending move will not affect the company’s ability to meet increased demand for the title. In fact, just prior to the Giller announcement, the company ordered a small reprint of the title, and a third reprint will ship in about 10 days, bringing the total print run to roughly 6,000 copies.

As for Thomas Allen’s publishing program, there will be no change to the usual output of about five titles per season. If anything, Allen says, the company is considering expanding its list.

In 2011, Thomas Allen is slated to publish new work from Governor General’s Literary Award–winning author David Gilmour, novelist Antanas Sileika, Tom Harpur (The Pagan Christ), and Lyndsay Green (You Could Live a Long Time: Are You Ready?), among others. “Our [publishing] division, as small as it is, is pretty precious to us,” Allen says.

Thomas Allen Publishers’ new address will be 390 Steelcase Road East; Markham, Ontario; L3R 1G2. Its phone number will remain (416) 361-0233.
