BookNet Canada bestsellers: The Canadian top 50
To kick off 2009, a very special bestseller list: the 50 top-selling Canadian authored titles for the month of December 2008, as compiled by BookNet Canada’s BNC SalesData. A few notes:
- Malcolm Gladwell leads the pack with Outliers, and his two previous books round out the top 20.
- The Scotiabank Giller Prize has propelled Joseph Boyden’s Through Black Spruce to #4, and his previous book, Three Day Road, makes it to #12.
- Kid-lit star Robert Munsch has the most appearances, with five titles (representing three different publishers).
- Two current titles, Rawi Hage’s Cockroach and Daniel Levitin’s The World in Six Songs, don't make the list. However, the previous titles by those authors – De Niro’s Game and This Is Your Brain on Music, respectively – do.
- There are about twice as many adult non-fiction titles as there are fiction.
- No fewer than eight hockey-related titles make the list.
- Random House of Canada imprints account for 12 titles on the list, while Penguin Canada has placed eight titles. Other multiples include HarperCollins Canada and McClelland & Stewart, with four titles each. H.B. Fenn and Company distributed seven titles on the list (including two Key Porter books), though several of those will no longer fall under the Fenn umbrella as of this month.
