George Ryga Award winner announced
Vancouver writer Leilah Nadir has won the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in B.C. Writing for her book The Orange Trees of Baghdad (Key Porter Books).
The Orange Trees of Baghdad was selected by final judge Ivan Townsend, a professor at the University of Lethbridge. It was shortlisted from 30 submissions by preliminary judges John Lent, the dean of Okanagan College's Kalamalka campus, and Ken Smedley, who runs the George Ryga Centre. The two other shortlisted books were Gary Geddes' Falseworks (Goose Lane Editions) and Ernest Hekkanen's Of a Fire Beyond the Hills (New Orphic Publishers).
Nadir received the award at a ceremony on July 26 in Vernon, B.C. She received a commemorative sculpture by Reg Kienast as well as a a full-page advertisement in BC BookWorld.
The award, now in its fifth year, honours the late playwright and novelist George Ryga.
