The Silver Palate Cookbook's silver anniversary

May. 30, 2007: Book launches are rarely about the food. However, at the May 29 launch party for the new 25th anniversary edition of the much-loved The Silver Palate Cookbook (Workman Publishing/Thomas Allen & Son) at Toronto's Bistro 990, partygoers were so busy eating, they occasionally forgot about the open bar.

May. 25, 2007: This year's National Business Book Award, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers and BMO Financial Group, went to Thomas Homer-Dixon's The Upside of Down at a ceremony in Toronto on May 14.

Back to the '70s with Teresa Toten

May. 17, 2007: YA author Teresa Toten launched her latest novel, Better Than Blonde (Penguin Canada), at a Toronto restaurant on May 7. The book is set in the 1970s, so launchgoers were encouraged to dress up as if they were back in the Me Decade.

Key Porter's private dancer

May. 17, 2007: On May 16, Key Porter Books launched Vanessa Craft's novel Out of Character - about a woman who takes a job at a "gentleman's club" in London, England - with an event at 65 Degrees in Toronto. The book's subject matter gave Key Porter a chance to work one of publishing's more eyebrow-raising recent launch trends: exotic dancers.

Proulx rocks out

May. 17, 2007: Joanne Proulx launched her novel Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet (Penguin Canada) with a This Is Not a Reading Series event at Toronto's Gladstone Hotel on May 15. And she had a little help from a rock & roll band.

May. 11, 2007: Claire Cameron launched her first novel, The Line Painter (HarperCollins Canada), at Toronto's Gladstone Hotel on April 26.

The friends of Gary Hyland

May. 11, 2007: Hagios Press launched Gary Hyland's new poetry collection Hands Reaching in Water at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre on May 3. More than 150 people attended and the Oak & Rose Book Shoppe sold more than 70 copies of the book.

B.C. Book Prize winners

May. 04, 2007: B.C.'s literati gathered at a gala ceremony on April 28 at Victoria's Government House to honour the winners and nominees of this year's B.C. Book Prizes.

May. 04, 2007: Coach House Books brought writers, editors and readers together at Toronto club Revival.

Apr. 20, 2007: Noah Richler won the $25,000 British Columbia Award for Canadian Non-fiction for his book This Is My Country, What's Yours?: A Literary Atlas of Canada (McClelland & Stewart).

Cake, but no Death, for Heather Mallick's new book.

Apr. 18, 2007: Heather Mallick launched her new collection of acerbic essays, Cake or Death: The Excruciating Choices of Everyday Life (Knopf Canada), at an event held in the labyrinthine Verity Women's Club in downtown Toronto on April 17.

The Halifax International Writers' Festival

Apr. 18, 2007: The Halifax International Writers' Festival ran from March 28 through April 1.

What a swell party this is, for Rifke at the Four Seasons

Apr. 18, 2007: It had to be one of the swankiest Canadian book launches on record: Rosalie Wise Sharp's memoir Rifke (ECW Press) was launched at the Four Seasons in Toronto on April 17, where Sharp's husband, Four Seasons owner Isadore Sharp, hosted hundreds of high society folk (and a few dungaree'd publishing types). Each of the 74 Four Seasons locations also bought 50 copies of the book.

Kenneth J. Harvey wins Winterset

Mar. 30, 2007: Kenneth J. Harvey's novel Inside, which won the Roger's prize for fiction at the Writers' Trust awards earlier this month, has won the 2006 Winterset Award. Harvey was presented with the award at a ceremony at Government House in St. John's, Newfoundland on March 29.

Mar. 30, 2007: The launch for Marjorie Harris's How To Make a Garden was held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario, on March 22, 2007. The event was co-hosted by A Different Drummer Books and the RBG.

Emily Schultz Eats Her Shoe

Mar. 29, 2007: Well, not really. But the Toronto novelist and poet did launch her new book of poems, Songs for the Dancing Chicken (which is partly based on the work of movie director Werner Herzog, who did eat his shoe in a famous short film), with a This Is Not a Reading Series event at the Gladstone Hotel.

George Jonas's Reflections on Islam

Mar. 29, 2007: George Jonas launched Reflections on Islam (Key Porter Books) at the University of Toronto's Massey College with a little help from Conrad Black and Barbara Amiel, who made a surprise visit from Chicago.

IBBY Canada's Hot, Hot Cuba fundraiser

Mar. 28, 2007: The International Board on Books for Young People's biennial fundraiser was held at Toronto's Lula Lounge on March 21, and this year not only raised money to writers in Cuba but also to support IBBY's Fund for Children in Crisis. The first project will aid children in Lebanon.

Let the Dog Decide author at the B.C. Book Fair

Mar. 13, 2007: Dog training expert and author Dale Stavroff and his dog, "The Dude," did some demonstrations at the HarperCollins Canada booth at the B.C. Book Fair.
