Book launches are rarely about the food. However, at the May 29 launch party for the new 25th anniversary edition of the much-loved The Silver Palate Cookbook (Workman Publishing/Thomas Allen & Son) at Toronto's Bistro 990, partygoers were so busy eating, they occasionally forgot about the open bar.

YA author Teresa Toten launched her latest novel, Better Than Blonde (Penguin Canada), at a Toronto restaurant on May 7. The book is set in the 1970s, so launchgoers were encouraged to dress up as if they were back in the Me Decade.

On May 16, Key Porter Books launched Vanessa Craft's novel Out of Character - about a woman who takes a job at a "gentleman's club" in London, England - with an event at 65 Degrees in Toronto. The book's subject matter gave Key Porter a chance to work one of publishing's more eyebrow-raising recent launch trends: exotic dancers.

Joanne Proulx launched her novel Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet (Penguin Canada) with a This Is Not a Reading Series event at Toronto's Gladstone Hotel on May 15. And she had a little help from a rock & roll band.

It had to be one of the swankiest Canadian book launches on record: Rosalie Wise Sharp's memoir Rifke (ECW Press) was launched at the Four Seasons in Toronto on April 17, where Sharp's husband, Four Seasons owner Isadore Sharp, hosted hundreds of high society folk (and a few dungaree'd publishing types). Each of the 74 Four Seasons locations also bought 50 copies of the book.

Kenneth J. Harvey's novel Inside, which won the Roger's prize for fiction at the Writers' Trust awards earlier this month, has won the 2006 Winterset Award. Harvey was presented with the award at a ceremony at Government House in St. John's, Newfoundland on March 29.
