FUGITIVE CATS
When Anne Michaels published Fugitive Pieces in 1996, few could have predicted the astounding success the poet would achieve with that debut novel. Fast forward almost 20 years (egads!) and Michaels is embarking on a new literary adventure: writing for children. Taking the idea of a crazy cat lady in a charming direction, The Adventures of Miss Petitfour (Tundra, Nov.) is an early reader about a Mary Poppins–esque heroine and her 16 flying feline companions. With names such as Purrsia, Captain Catkin, Grigorovitch, and Your Shyness, the cats and the adventures they embark on with their eccentric human chaperone (including a quest for “birthday cheddar”) are a far cry from the brooding moodiness of Michaels’ writing for adults.
