Montreal’s Babar en Ville kids’ bookstore to close at end of month

Babar en VilleDowntown Montreal kids’ bookstore Babar en Ville is shutting down at the end of September, a month before its 10th anniversary.

According to a post on the shop’s Facebook page, the Westmount location is closing due to the sale of its building. In an interview with CBC Radio, assistant manager Angus Byers said, “When it comes down to it, it’s a rent issue. Our building was owned by Judy Mappin, who owned the Double Hook Bookstore, before we moved in, and when she retired we took over the space. Judy passed on a year or two ago at this point, and the building is being sold.”

Babar en Ville’s Pointe-Claire Village flagship store, which turns 30 next year, will remain open.
