Matthew Forsythe (Drawn & Quarterly)
Montrealer Matthew Forsythe’s surreal cartoons about a young girl battling her way through a land of squids and giants and walking cameras began as doodles he drew while teaching kids English in Korea. But it soon became a popular web comic, and has now been published as a deluxe volume by Drawn & Quarterly. Though the book is aimed at comic-loving adults as much as kids, Forsythe’s casually absurd, nearly wordless images are the kind of thing that any young person reared on the free-floating visual logic of manga and Miyazaki movies will devour like candy.
