Michael DeForge, Nina Bunjevac featured in 2014 Best American Comics anthology

American comicsThe lineup for the 2014 edition of The Best American Comics has been announced, featuring selections of work by several Canadians alongside comics greats like Charles Burns and R. Crumb. Released annually by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the series collects the best comics published in North America from the previous year.

The anthology includes an excerpt from Michael DeForge’s Lose 4, the fourth instalment of his award-winning series published by Koyama Press. DeForge was featured on the cover of Q&Q in May as part of a series on up-and-coming Canadian cartoonists.

Another artist highlighted in Q&Q’s series is Nina Bunjevac, whose comics will also be included. “August 1977” originally appeared in Heartless, published by Conundrum Press in 2012.

Kidlit comics will be represented with an excerpt of Groundwood Books’ Jane, the Fox and Me, written by Fanny Britt and illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault.

The annual anthology is edited by a prominent expert in the field. This year’s editor is Scott McCloud, an American cartoonist known for his non-fiction critical works about comics.
