Margaret Atwood’s dystopian MaddAddam trilogy is set to be developed for television in a major production for HBO. Deadline Holywood reports that filmmaker Darren Aronofsky is attached to the project as executive producer and may direct, while Atwood is said to be serving as a consulting producer.

MaddAddam, the final book of Atwood’s self-described “speculative fiction” trilogy set in an environmentally devastated world, appeared last fall. It was preceded by 2009’s The Year of the Flood and 2003’s Oryx and Crake.

Aronofsky is known for films that have mixed acclaim (Black Swan, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream) with box-office appeal (Noah). Atwood herself is no stranger to the world of film. Her 2008 Massey Lecture, Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, was turned into a documentary film by Canadian director Jennifer Baichwal, while The Handmaid’s Tale was adapted for the screen by Harold Pinter in a film starring Faye Dunaway.
