Winners of the 2012 Canadian Children’s Literature Awards

The Canadian Children’s Literature Awards were handed out at a ceremony at The Ritz-Carlton in Toronto last night.

Tim Hockey, president and CEO of TD Canada Trust, announced that the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award increased its cash prize from $25,000 to $30,000, making it Canada’s richest children’s literature award. The prize was awarded to Tribly Kent for Stones for My Father (Tundra Books).

Other winners include Geneviève Côté, who was awarded the $20,000 Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award for Without You (Kids Can Press). Katey Cayley won the $5,000 Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People for her novel The Hangman in the Mirror (Annick Press).

Loon (Groundwood Books), written by Susan Vande Griek and illustrated by Karen Reczuch, was awarded the $10,000 Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children’s Non-fiction, while Charlie’s Key, written by Rob Mills, won the $5,000 John Spray Mystery Award.

The newly established $5,000 Monica Hughes Award for Science Fiction and Fantasy was awarded to PJ Sarah Collins for her YA novel What Happened to Serenity (Red Deer Press).
