Canadians take home Eisner Awards

The San Diego Comic-Con International may have come and gone, but the glory of the Eisner Awards, held during the four-day smorgasbord of all things comics, lives on for a handful of Canadians.

The winners of the 2012 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were announced on Friday. Among the winners are the following talented canucks:

  • Toronto’s Ramón K. Pérez won best graphic album (new) and best penciller/inker for his adaptation Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand (Archaia)
  • Haligonian Darwyn Cooke won best graphic album (reprint) for Richard Stark’s Parker: The Martini Edition (IDW) and best short story for “The Seventh”
  • Jennifer Haines, owner of The Dragon comic shop in Guelph, Ontario, won the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award
  • Montreal’s Drawn & Quarterly is the Canadian publisher of Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths by Shigeru Mizuki, winner of best U.S. edition of international material (Asia)

The Eisner wasn’t the only love showered on D&Q at Comic-Con. The publisher was also featured on two panels. One, with Fantagraphic Books, introduced the company’s upcoming graphic novel projects. The other, which addressed the rise of Canada in the international comics scene, included panelists Kate Beaton, Jeff Lemire, Doug Savage, Calum Johnston, and moderator Chris Butcher of the Beguiling and the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.
