Random House of Canada merges M&S and Doubleday Canada into new group

Random House of Canada has announced the creation of the McClelland & Stewart Doubleday Canada Publishing Group, which pulls two of its imprints, McClelland & Stewart and Doubleday Canada, into a new publishing division.

A press release issued by Brad Martin, president and CEO of Random House of Canada, states that “editorial identities of the imprints will remain distinct” and “there are no plans to reduce staff.”

Doubleday publisher Kristin Cochrane will lead the new division as the newly appointed executive publisher, McClelland & Stewart Doubleday Canada Publishing Group, and executive vice-president, Random House of Canada. M&S president Doug Pepper will become publisher, Signal/M&S, and vice-president, Random House of Canada. M&S executive vice-president and publisher of fiction Ellen Seligman assumes the role of publisher, M&S, and vice-president, Random House of Canada. Tundra Books managing director Alison Morgan has been promoted to publisher of the children’s book imprint and vice-president, Random House of Canada.

The new group’s executive team is rounded out by Jordan Fenn, publisher of Fenn/M&S, Robert McCullough, publisher of Appetite by Random House, and Lynn Henry, who, along with Cochrane, will lead Doubleday Canada, Bond Street Books, Doubleday Canada Books for Young Readers, and Anchor Canada.

In January, Random House of Canada announced it had become sole owner of M&S. At that time, Martin told Q&Q, “The fact that M&S will now be part of the Random House family as a separate division, like Doubleday [and] Knopf Random House, ensures that we will continue to invest in and build the M&S name.”
