Happy birthday, John le Carré

John le Carré, known for spy thrillers such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, turned 79 this Tuesday. According to MobyLives:

He’s since gone on to write some of the finest thrillers in the literature. And now, in his eightieth year, he’s still going strong. His new book, Our Kind of Traitor, is receiving rave reviews. In a review in The New York Times, Michiko Kakutani called it, “a bullet-train of a thriller”, saying it’s “the author’s most thrilling thriller in years.”

Caught the Le Carre interview Sunday on Writers and Company. His assessment of world events verged on the bizarre. I’ve heard better explanations of international affairs at the hotel bar several hours after sales conference. It’s a good thing he has stuck to fiction and not taken to essay writing in his golden years. Despite the praise of the NYT I’m off to Book City to grab a copy of the new book. So many wonderful nights spent reading Le Carre. His fiction has helped define our age.

Far from a “bizarre take on wolrd events” Le Carre has, over many long years, lifted the dark shroud and given us a clear-eyed view of the real machinations behind world events. That he’s been able to do this at the same time as giving us great, entertaining stories, is a remarkable achievement.
