Following closely upon the Poetry is Public is Poetry initiative that debuted in Toronto at the end of August, the city’s poet laureate is set to unveil another piece of urban poetry, this time in partnership with Project: Urban Canvas, an Amnesty International mural series celebrating the International Declaration of Human Rights. On Oct. 19, Dionne Brand will unveil a specially commissioned poem that has been painted on a 1,000-square-foot mural adjacent to the Arts Etobicoke Gallery in Toronto’s west end. Along with Mayor David Miller, Brand will host a “walking reading” of the poem, which was based on Article 13 of the Declaration: “Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.”

Marina Nemat, author of the newly released memoir After Tehran, writes in a press release:

Freedom is like water in the palms of our hands, and if we take our eyes off it for even a moment, it can drip through our fingers until nothing is left except thirst. In this beautiful poem, Dionne Brand reminds us not to take our liberties for granted, because in many parts of the world, people can only dream of the freedoms that we enjoy on a daily basis.
