Lyon responds to B.C. Ferries ban

Annabel Lyon, who is currently in the U.K. promoting The Golden Mean, had this to say to Q&Q about the recent flurry of publicity surrounding B.C. Ferries’ refusal to carry her novel in their 36 on-board gift shops because of the cover image:

The decision is amusing and a little silly — as the mother of toddlers, I know nothing embarrasses them less than bare bums — apart from the fact that it’s the evocation of Classical Greek statuary that gives the cover its beauty. It’s a commentary on our culture, for sure, that you can play violent video games on the ferry but not look at a beautiful work of art.

Samuel Butler saw it coming in 1878:

“The Discobolus is put here because he is vulgar -
He has neither vest nor pants with which to cover his limbs.
    Oh God Oh Montreal”

    Oh BC Ferries!
