Richard Bachmann retires from A Different Drummer

Richard Bachmann, owner of Burlington’s A Different Drummer Books, is set to retire. The veteran bookseller announced this week that he has sold the business to longtime employee Ian Elliot. From the press release:

Ian Elliot has worked at A Different Drummer for almost twenty years and is well-known to publishers and customers alike. Although the store eschews titles, Elliot has effectively been the store manager for many years and has been instrumental in developing Different Drummer’s institutional and library sales.

A Different Drummer was founded by Al Cummings in 1970, and Bachmann took over in the mid-1980s. In 1998, the store was named Bookseller of the Year by the Canadian Booksellers Association, and in 2007 Bachmann won the Jack Award for excellence in book promotion.
