New political tell-all casts John Edwards in unflattering limelight

Move aside, Game Change. A new political tell-all is set to hit shelves on Jan. 30: the aptly titled The Politician: An Insider’s Account of John Edwards’s Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down, written by Edwards’s former campaign aide Andrew Young. The book purportedly offers a revealing look at the affair Edwards tried to hide from the media and his cancer-stricken wife. Today, John and Elizabeth Edwards announced their separation after Edwards admitted last week to fathering his mistress’s young daughter. From Reuters:

A statement from Elizabeth Edwards’ publicist at Random House, which published her book last year, Resilience, said Elizabeth Edwards, 60, “is moving on with her life and wants to put this difficult chapter behind her.”

As for the book itself, the Wall Street Journal offers several sample revelations, including the ever-personable Edwards on having to make appearances at state fairs: “I know I’m the people’s senator, but do I have to hang out with them?”

How could anybody object to Edwards’ state fair sentiment. We seem to want to idealize our politicians but they assuredly don’t idealize us. How to explain our interest in Pierre Trudeau who left behind scads of letters and personal notations in order for us to know him better? Why not, he had no interest is knowing us, except to advise a gawking public to “Just Watch Me!” And we do, even in absentia. And what of Obama another man of the people who took a showcase interest in Joe The Plumber? One year in and Joe or Jake or Trixie have yet to be invited over to the White House for a get-to-know you lunch and a spirited game of lawn darts. Democracy demands that we pick our leaders and experience tells us that that’s as far as it goes. The only way the electorate will ever get into 24 Sussex Drive for a nightcap is if he or she manages to outwit the RCMP (fairly likely) and out duel (fairly unlikely) the formidable Madame. Chretien. The message on every political leader’s lapel pin is this–keep your distance, for security and sanitary reasons. In the Capitals of the world it is always flu season. Can we really object?

angel guerra says: “How could anybody object to Edwards’ state fair sentiment”

    Because it’s insulting and hypocritical?
