Apple’s new iPad features e-reader app called iBooks

During today’s announcement of the much-hyped Apple iPad, Steve Jobs unveiled an application called iBooks, an e-reader connected to a virtual bookstore where you can purchase and read e-books on the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen. iBooks looks a lot like iTunes and essentially functions the same way. It uses the ePub format and has five major publishing partners: Penguin, HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan. Random House is the obvious key player missing from the list and spokesperson Stuart Applebaum told Quill they are “looking forward to continuing conversations with [Apple] about how we might work best together.”

Initial reports say the iPad will be priced at at starting point of $499 U.S.  iBooks is apparently only available in the U.S. Apple is hoping to have an international version available in June or July.
