Hacker breaks Kindle DRM protection

Boy Genius Report’s Marc Flores broke the news that an Israeli programmer managed to break the DRM for Kindle books so that titles can be downloaded onto any device:

The hacker, known only as Labba, posed a challenge on a hacker forum and was quickly aided by other programmers to discover the hack for the Kindle. They were essentially able to break the DRM protection and find a way to get the eBooks converted to an open format and into PDF files. This allows the files to be read on several eReaders, not just the Kindle. Now we have to wait and see what Amazon will do to patch things up, but Labba says whenever Amazon does release a software solution, he will be able to hack it again – just like the iPhone getting jailbroken with every software update. Or, you know, you can just buy paper books.

    Paper books? What are those?

  • Kendra

Not surprised, but hope it might serve as a wake-up call to Amazon that DRM does not work.

  • Matt

Wasn’t this done a long time ago?

Realistically, a large portion of people using readers won’t bother to tamper with the DRM.

  • anon

So, Matt, would you say it’s about the same percentage of readers who would tamper with DRM that would shoplift from a bookstore?

Dakota u r a idiot. u can’t read yourself to death and for the reading world this is a big thing. u insulted a lot of respected people and there opinions. this could change the industry of books and i think it would be smarter to just go back to paper even though it is not great for the envirament.

  • Dakota

Sorry my little sister got on to my comp.I have a kindle myself and i am happy mine hasn’t got hacked into yet .I fell sorry for the people who’s did. Well got to go for now.
    bye

  • Ember

u r still an idiot. a man haked into the program not indiviguals. u need to read the story. urs will not be haked into anytime soon. its just that he got past there protection.

  • Dakota

    Still ember,
our industies in America have come to something very big to day in every ones daily life. The Kindle is just a small part of all the tecnology we have today. Yes there are some very smart people out in the world who well like to take over things. Meaning HACKERS. Book with paper will soon be long gone . Tecnology will yes someday take over. So it may be your opinion that books should be paper forever ,but in the end the population will take over, and books will soon become a small part of tecnology.

u obviously have never read or seen the play farenhiet 451. it shows u what ur little idea might do to society. and books will never be totally be gone. people will always have a need for books weather or not others agree with this is there opinion.

Tampering with DRM is not the digital equivalent of stealing books. For those of us that have purchased the Kindle and have spent a lot of money buying books for it, the prospect of those titles being anchored to the Kindle in the event of switching devices left a lot to be desired.

Now that the DRM has been hacked, if the Nook or Sony’s e-reader end up being better devices I can easily switch to them without having to face losing hundreds of dollars of material.

This hack has nothing to do with piracy and is a work-around for what could easily be considered an anti-competitive move on the part of Amazon.
