2009 Man Booker Prize shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2009 Man Booker Prize was announced today:

  • A.S. Byatt The Children’s Book (Chatto and Windus)
  • J.M. Coetzee Summertime (Harvill Secker)
  • Adam Foulds The Quickening Maze (Jonathan Cape)
  • Hilary Mantel Wolf Hall (Fourth Estate)
  • Simon Mawer The Glass Room (Little, Brown)
  • Sarah Waters The Little Stranger (Virago)

South African writer J.M Coetzee, who won the Booker in 1999 for Disgrace and 1983 for Life & Times of Michael K, would be the first author to win the prize three times if successful this year. A.S. Byatt won for Possession in 1990. Sarah Waters has been shortlisted twice, for Fingersmith (2002) and The Night Watch (2006).

The winner will be announced on Oct.6, 2009. The winning author will receive £50,000.

Hooray for the Booker jury for picking a shortlist that values research, period drama, and settings pre-freighted with historical significance, turning literature into an evening with the History Channel.

  • Xenia

They picked the same old hacks with nothing to say and plots that are boring and trite. If this is just another PR effort to sell books, they have to do better than that.
