Books exempt from Ontario HST

The Toronto Star’s initial report on the Ontario budget contains a fleeting but encouraging reference to books:

There will be some exemptions, such as children’s clothing, feminine hygiene products and books, but the 13 per cent will be applied for the first time on things like homes of more than $400,000, heating fuel, gasoline, tobacco, taxis, golf green fees and landscaping, newspapers and magazines, gym membership, veterinarian fees and even vitamins.

Emphasis added.

Update. There it is in the official budget release:

Books, diapers, children’s clothing and footwear, children’s car seats and car booster seats, and feminine hygiene products would be exempt from the provincial portion of the single sales tax.

And just to be perfectly clear, lest the headline cause any confusion, Ontario book-buyers are still on the hook for the GST, of course.
