We’re with the banned

Freedom to Read Week is approaching – it officially runs from Feb. 22-28, although some events will take place early. This is the 25th anniversary of the campaign, and that milestone will be marked with a Feb. 25 event at Toronto’ Gladstone Hotel, featuring Derek Finkle, Janine Fuller, Ken Setterington, and Russell Smith, as well as music from author and noted banjo virtuoso Sean Dixon.

The night before, there’s a PEN Canada fundraiser dubbed “Banned Together,” in which authors will read from children’s books that have been censored or challenged. Participants include Michael Winter (reading from Kevin Major’s Hold Fast), Brian Francis and Derek McCormack (reading from Judy Blume), and many others, including Tim Wynne-Jones, Paul Quarrington, Kenneth Oppel, Michael Helm, and Darren Wershler.

Keep checking the Freedom to Read Week event listings for the full list of national events.

Sean had to back out (but we hope he’ll be there regardless!). The musical entertainment for the FTR 25th at the Gladstone will be Myk Freedman and the Spelling Bee Sharps (who are all also members of Saint Dirt Elementary School).

Thanks for spreading the word about Freedom to Read Week and Banned Together on Feb. 24. The event will also raise funds for the children’s book organization IBBY Canada and will include wonderful editors and publishers, such as Ellen Seligman of M&S, Iris Tupholme of HarperCollins Canada, and Alana Wilcox of Coach House Books.
