I think that the abstinence issue is important. People have to remember that Bella's blood is very attractive to Edward, so he is constantly fighting his attraction to her blood and his attraction to her body. If he gives in to his desires he may lose control and kill her. Especially in the first book where he is learning to fight the power of the smell of her blood to him. So his not wanting to try sex goes with his character of protecting Bella above and beyond his own needs. Also he is born in 1901 so he is not from this time when teenagers view sex on a more recreational level than morally. Everything about his character that attracts Bella is from his time, like his politeness as well as the way he talks.
