Walter the Farting Dog goes to Hollywood

Remember Walter the Farting Dog, the hit series of kids’ picture books co-created by New Brunswick author Glenn Murray? (Q&Q has covered it a fair bit.) Alert the Academy: a movie adaptation is set to begin production next year, according to Canadian Press. And for readers who’ve asked themselves, “What would make Walter’s saga even better?” and answered themselves, “The Jonas Brothers,” it’s a banner day.

This bit caught Quillblog’s attention:

The screenplay will be written by Alec Sokolow (Toy Story, Garfield) and Joel Cohen (No Country For Old Men, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?).

But before we got too excited – imagining Walter caught up in a convoluted kidnapping-and-revenge plot, complete with bowling and a few surprise gory deaths – we remembered that there’s no h in Coen. Sadly, CP is probably mixing up the Oscar-winning auteur with this guy.

Apparently the movie will be produced by the Farrelly brothers, and star some boy band group called the Jonas brothers.

Sadly indeed… For me, as sad news goes, this one doesn’t exactly ring the doorbell at the gates of despair… As Walter’s co-creator and full-time front man, I was pleased to do a deal with the Farrellys — call me crazy — and am content to watch them do what they do best, having done likewise myself until now. There’s a small twinge of self-righteousness about this revelation that troubles me, but why interfere with entitlement to publish what inquiring minds need to know? Thanks for straightening us out on that one. After all, who’d want to be associated with a track record like that of poor Joel Cohen, saddled as he is with that extra “H”..?
You’re right. Don’t get too excited.
Guess I can’t say: See you at the movies.

Personally, I think it’s great news! Heaven knows it’s a tough slog trying to get a picture book published the fact that this popular is book is now going to be a movie, makes me smile. This just confirms my belief that we still need fun silly books in kid’s publishing.

Thanks for that thought, Patricia. I totally agree. Walter began as a funny way to attract reluctant young readers, especially boys, but he’s grown beyond that — including becoming a mascot of sorts for sick kids, and for cancer patients of all ages (something we couldn’t have predicted). He’s a dog with a problem that he can’t seem to change, but he always ends up turning his liability into an asset. I always felt that one reason for Walter’s success was that the post 9/11 world needed something simple to laugh about — something that suggested there’s hope of turning things around… I’ve seen it first-hand in the way millions of readers all over the world have seized upon Walter for their own personal reasons. Now, with the western economy circling the drain, here’s comes the Walter movie! The timing is no accident… By the way, most of the books I sign are NOT for kids…

Hats off to Walter and his Dad! …we need an ebook format on Amazon’s Kindle!!! in 32 languages so all have the pleasure to remind us that we are “all wacky and wonderful” in our own way!
