Meyer dumps new Twilight installment

Rabid Twilight fans the world over will have to find something else to do with their future Friday nights, as series author Stephanie Meyer has decided to abort a planned companion volume. According to Entertainment Weekly, the volume in question – Midnight Sun, which would have seen hunky vampire Edward take over the lead role – was scuttled after a rough draft was stolen and illegally posted online. In the EW piece, Meyer says that she “feels too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun.”

As for the leak itself, Meyer writes, “I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. […] This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.”

Shortly after the piece was posted, however, a note was added that Meyer has now decided to post the first three chapters of said work on her website, “in fairness to her true, loyal fans.”

I was extremely disappointed in the news about her next novel Midnight Sun. While I wish that all of Ms. Meyer’s readers would not be punished for the actions of someone she apparently trusted enough to give a draft to, I do understand her being upset and would rather she not work on Midnight Sun now if she won’t do justice to the story. I will have to continue to re-read the original four books and the draft of the chapters she did post because they are beyond awesome!!!! I will have to patiently wait for Midnight Sun to come out at some future date, which I was lucky enough to not have to do for the original four.

Its really no fair to all us Twilight fans who have been so loyal to tephanie Meyer in the past.
The person who did this to her should be ashamed be he/she ruined it for everyone else.
i hope Ms. Meyer continues and not let tis get to her too much. Although, i do understand how she must feel.
i was really lokkin forward to Midnight Sun!!!

I am very interested & excited to see the Edward book published, I loved all of these books just like the rest of the world, but to sit here and read these mean spirited things about the author Stephenie Meyer, that is just wrong.
without her, Stephenie and her wonderful mind, you would never have been taken into that wonderful dream of Edward & Bella. I feel she has a right to be upset, and I am sorry that this person betrayed Stephenie and the rest of us. I hope with time she will put her loyal vans first and finish Midnight Sun, so I can place it along side my collection of Twilight.
Thank you Stephenie for all you have given us. Kim M

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Now what are we supposed to do. To begin with I was devastated that the saga is over but all that kept me going was Midnight Sun. Stephanie, I understand you have been stabbed in the back but there are millions of us that will be more than happy to pick you up. I seriously can’t imagine life without more installments, please disregard the wrong doings of those you trusted, Karma will get them, remember your fans and how much we love you and your brilliant mind. I can’t explain how much this story means to me, it really is my beacon through a long time battle of cancer and depression and without more Edward and Bella to look forward too….well….I don’t even know. Please, please, please write the books and publish them for yourself and for those of us that have so much riding on this saga, Ms.Meyer you truly don’t understand how many lives you have touched and what you have given us, even if it is just something to look forward too. You have an incredible talent and a brilliant mind, don’t waste it because of the hardships we deal with through life, make your sadness into determination and do the books-you have left millions of us bloodthirsty.

I NEED MORE EDWARD!!!! Deb P. said it all and said it well. You could post the whole bloody thing on the web and I would still buy it! Heck, I’ll send $19.95 right now… Please dont torture us…. please finish Midnightsun! Edward needs to be heard.

I never heard of your books until I drove my 17 year old step daughter to line up at the bookstore with hundreds of others
at midnight to purchase Breaking Dawn. It peaked my interest, so I asked what the series was about. As soon as I
heard vampires I knew I’d be hooked & hooked I have been for the past month filling what time I have with Bella &
    Edward.
Your series has taken me into a wonderful world of myth & magic. I have been known to say “I want my own vampire
    & wearwolf!!”
Please Stephanie - take the pain, frustration & loss of control you feel towards whats happened with Midnight Sun & turn it into
Edwards pain & frustration for not being able to control his desire to love a human!!!!
Your fans will still purchase your book - forget about it & continue to move forward knowing that you will continue to
open the doorway to your true fans minds!

I’m the 46 year old father of a 13 year old girl and I hope to God that my daughter will never develop into anything remotely similar to Meyer’s main character Bella. I read the first book in the series and found it profoundly cheesy and poorly written. But I was OK with my daughter reading it since the story seemed fairly harmless. I also felt that I should give her a few more years before I insist more firmly on her reading books of some substance. However, I began to fume after reading books 2 and 3 of the series, which little by little establish the most spineless, clueless, and codependent young female character I have ever experienced. And again I let it go because I didn’t want her to see me as the censoring father. Well, after book 4 I had to have a serious and embarrassing talk with my daughter courtesy of S. Meyer - but mind you, not the dreaded “sex talk” - you know, the talk about abusive sex, sexual manipulation, pedophilia, wife swapping and threesomes. End of story, going forward I will not tolerate in my house anything written by S. Meyer.

  8. Marie Mcmannon Rhonda O'Dell says:

I UNDERSTAND S. Meyer being upset, but Come on!!! Just finish Midnight Sun..pleeeeeeeeeeease!!! I truly wished I never even came across the rough draft, it’s such a big tease. It is so unfair to us loyal readers, us avid fans….I cannot get enough of Edward, enough of the entire saga!!!!!!!!

  9. Marie Mcmannon Rhonda O'Dell says:

Oh and to the 46 year old father above my recent comment…um, are you out of your mind?? Or better yet, what books are YOU READING??? Mrs. Meyer’s work is brilliant, very well written, entertaining, but most importantly DOES NOT exploit any sexual thoughts you seem to have gotten!!! You either have no intelligence or your mind works in freaky ways, for you got the wrong ideas while reading her books.
FYI: I am 32 year old and my sister (Rhonda) is a 36 year old with 3 children…RETROSPECT? We feel that these books depicted teenage love with much respect and no vulgarity. Mrs. Meyer even went as far as making Edward and Bella a MARRIED couple and making it known that Bella was 18..an adult…before they even “made love.’

Hence..YOU Mr. 46 year old father are clueless!!

  10. Anon says:

I think the father above was referring more so to the inactive/active imbalance between the characters. The female character is often weak, slow, and in need of help, and dependent upon the male character. I applaud a father who thinks that such a character is a bad role model for his daughter.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the books, for either the young daughter in question, or an adult, or whoever. But you should be aware of stereotypes that are being perpetuated. One of the things I liked about the Harry Potter series (another huge YA hit) was that the young female character was very competent and active.
