Arts cuts keep reverberating
Opposition to the Conservative Party’s cuts in arts funding (see the complete list here) is growing. Opposition parties have launched a House of Commons review, and the NDP’s Peggy Nash tells CBC.ca the cuts “were done in secret, with no consultation, with no public review.”
“There is real concern the government is picking and choosing which artists it is supporting and which artists it is not supporting,” said Nash. “I suggest, in a democracy, that is a dangerous thing.”
There’s also a town hall meeting coming up in Toronto next Wednesday, hosted by FUSE magazine. (Note that the View on Canadian Art blog also has several other recent posts relating to the cuts and reaction.)
And while we’re on the subject, the Ontario Library Association points to this study (second item) about the economic value of culture. The study indicates that culture is worth $43-billion in Canada each year, nearly 4% of the gross domestic product.

Yann I guess all those books you keep sending the PM has had an impact.
Or maybe Yann just pissed him off . . .
It’s possible that Jason Kenney has been intercepting all the books and eating them. He looks very well fed.
