The books and magazines of Dave

Writer Joe Hagan looks at the growth of the McSweeney’s empire from, not surprisingly, a business-centric perspective (Hagan’s writing for Forbes). Which means that the piece is refreshingly free of the usual analysis (whether admiring or disdainful) of McSweeney’s mainman Dave Eggers’ personality. Hagan covers the McSweeney’s culture of volunteerism and the practice of small advances against higher author royalties, but also suggests a new pragmatism: they no longer print the journal exclusively in Iceland (due to currency exchange-rate changes), and are considering adding advertising, however limited, to the high-minded magazine The Believer.
