New book for Roth, new owner for Houghton Mifflin

Approaching old age, Philip Roth continues to write at a busy pace. A squib in The New York Times reports that Roth is set to publish the ninth and final book featuring his longtime doppelganger, Nathan Zuckerman. Exit Ghost will be published next October and will presumably cover Zuckerman’s death (and not just a false alarm à la The Counterlife back in 1987).

In industry news, Roth’s publisher, Houghton Mifflin, is going to be bought by Riverdeep Holdings, an Irish educational software firm, for $1.75-billion. Houghton is known most for its large educational division, the sales force for which will be integrated with Riverdeep’s.
