Richard Gere, poetry, and convicted felons
You can count on the New York Times to keep us up to date on the wackier happenings in the book world. Last week, they were reporting on Toni Morrison bringing slam poetry to the Louvre; this week, there’s a brief heads-up about Richard Gere and his wife, actress Carey Lowell. Tomorrow, the couple will be bringing prison poems to a scholarly conference at the New School University in New York.
The conference is titled, “Punishment: the U.S. Record.” At it, Gere and Lowell will read “poems and other texts written by American prisoners.”
Other attendees of the conference include “activists, scholars and writers” — the kinds of people usually billed to appear at these things.
