Boxing — the link between publishing and municipal politics

Toronto’s Florida Jack’s boxing gym garnered media attention earlier this fall for being the venue of the launch of Craig Davidson’s The Fighter back in October. Perhaps motivated by the success of this unorthodox event, the powers that be at Florida Jack’s invited Toronto’s mayoral candidates to step into the ring tonight and “box the vote.”

Unfortunately, as the Toronto Star reports, mayor David Miller and councillor Jane Pitfield turned down the invitation, and are now being sent “rubber chickens wearing boxing gloves.” It seems the politicos in this town are not nearly as bloodthirsty as the writers.
