Kundera novel to be published in Czech
Literary Saloon draws our attention to a news item at Radio Prague about Czech author Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being.
Yes, the book has been in print for over two decades, but it’s finally being published in the Czech Republic, despite having been written in the author’s mother tongue in the first place.
Radio Prague turned to Kundera’s agent, Jiri Srstka, for an explanation: “‘I don’t think that Milan Kundera was ever against the book being published in Czech officially, even after many years. Kundera’s concern really rested with editing the book properly, and preparing it for publication in Czech. At first glance this doesn’t appear to be a big deal, but in the case of Milan Kundera, who is known for his perfectionism, this is a huge job […] but now readers will get the book that Milan Kundera thinks should exist.’”
