Schiller and Goethe: nicht wack

Not only can you read the poems of Friedrich Schiller in a book, you can also hear their rap versions. Doppel U (aka Christian Weirich) is the German rapper responsible for Zeitgeist, a recent album on which he raps the rhymes of Schiller.

But Weirich’s admiration for classic German poetry doesn’t stop with Schiller. He’s also a big fan of Goethe, and has “initiated an educational project aimed at getting school kids into the classics with the help of hip hop,” as Deutsche Welle reports.

Weirich interprets German poetry in terms more readily understandable than, say, metaphor and imagery. Here, he distills the meaning of Goethe’s poem “Found”: “‘Goethe wrote it for a woman who didn’t want to have a one-night stand with him,’ Doppel U said. ‘So he wrote this in order to persuade her.’”
