The Devil Wears Prada for the publishing set
Bridie Clark’s novel Because She Can isn’t slated to hit bookshelves until February of next year, but already a leaked set of galleys is making the rounds. Radar Online reports that Clark’s novel, which follows Jane Truman as she tries to make it in the big bad world of New York publishing, bears more than a passing resemblance to Clark’s own experience working as an editor at HarperCollins imprint ReganBooks. It’s not much of a stretch to imagine that Vivian Grant, the “fictional” tyrannical boss of Clark’s protagonist, is modelled on Judith Regan, publisher of ReganBooks.
Leaked quotes from Because She Can certainly seem to suggest as much: the fictional Grant is quoted slinging around more than her fair share of four-letter epithets, one of Regan’s trademark habits.
Regan herself seems to have been silent about the book so far, but it’s probably only a matter of time until a characteristically colourful response gets out.
