How late it is, how late
Proving once again that just because you publish every week doesn’t mean you can’t be almost three months behind, Macleans magazine has just come out with its own summer reading list, two weeks shy of Labour Day. Seven notable writers – four Canadian and three from away – pick one book to read during these last few days of warmth and sunshine.
Anita Rau Badami picks India-born novelist Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss, while Seth recommends a short story collection by Max Beerbohm. Lisa Moore recommends Dashiel Hammet’s The Thin Man, but then, mindful of the unwritten code of literary logrolling by which all St. John’s authors must abide, throws in a quick reference to Michael Winter’s The Big Why.
The most interesting recommendation comes from the U.K.’s Sarah Waters, who suggests beach-bound readers bring with them all 12 volumes of Anthony Powell’s Dance to the Music of Time. The best part of that one, of course, is that it would stretch your “summer reading” into late December – when Macleans will presumably be running its “best bets” for the fall.
