Poetry book launched atop Mt. Everest

Publishers can be counted on to come up with some pretty gimmicky promotional stunts every once in a while, but few can reach the go-big-or-go-home moxie of Shuvatara International School English Department head Wangdi Gyalpo, who had his book toted up to the top of Mt. Everest for its debut.

Bookninja.com links to the Everest News webpage, which details how Sonam Bhote took Gyalpo’s poetry collection Bard’s Sketches to the top of the world last month where he “launched” it.

The site reports that the men did it to prove that sherpas and Tibetans are more than just mountaineers and porters — they are writers, too. They’d also like the launch of the book to raise more awareness about poetry among sherpas and Tibetans.

Perhaps it’s fitting that no other literati were in attendance — they might have rioted when their booze froze.
