Learning, Potter, and Jesus boost U.S. publishing industry

The New York Times has a story on the Book Industry Study Group’s report on the previous year in American publishing. “Publishers generated net revenue of $34.6 billion in 2005, up 5.9 percent from the previous year, according to the report. The industry sold about 3.1 billion books last year, up 3.8 percent from a year earlier,” reports Motoko Rich. The strongest niches in terms of growth were elementary and high school textbooks (up 15.5%), juvenile books (up 9.6%), and religious books (up 8.1%). Writes Rich: “Adult consumer books, known in the industry as ‘adult trade,’ sold $8.8 billion last year, up 3.9 percent from a year earlier. But for 2006 and beyond, the study projects a decline in growth: This year sales are expected to rise only 2.6 percent, to $9.07 billion.”
