The search is on for Canada’s next top poet

Can you wield a metaphor with ferocity? Sling stanzas with the best of ‘em? Have you won a GG or Griffin or two? Well, you may be in luck, because the hunt is on for the country’s next Poet Laureate!

CBC.ca notes the recent call for nominations, fresh off the Hill. Current poet laureate Pauline Michels’s time is up come November 16th, and the feds need a fresh face to take on two year’s worth of poetic duties, which include, according to the Parliament of Canada Act, “writing poetry (especially for use in Parliament on important occasions), sponsoring poetry readings, advising the Parliamentary Librarian regarding the Library’s collection and acquisitions to enrich its cultural materials, and performing other related duties at the request of the Speaker of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Commons, or the Parliamentary Librarian.”

The deadline for submissions is July 31, so if you, or anyone you know, is a nationally recognized all-star super-fantastic poet for the ages, get thee to the government’s Parliamentary Poet Laureate page and learn how to throw your pen in.
